Term 2 2024 Update at Pymble - 5 July
News From the Pymble Alumni Team

News From the Pymble Alumni Team

It has been another wonderfully busy Term 2 at Pymble with many Alumni events held at our College and off campus too.

Our Alumni Networking Event in May was a huge success with over 200 alumni, both mentors and mentors, gathering to promote professional connection, mentoring and support amongst our community. I would like to offer my personal thanks to all our alumni who gave so generously of their time on the evening with special mention to Vanessa Hudson (1987), Eve Clark (1997), Li-Enn Koo (1991), Dr Fiona Roughley SC (2001), Dr Rowena Ditzell (1986), ESU Committee members and our alumni mentors. Your contributions were instrumental in making the evening such a success and we are grateful for the Pymble spirit you all so generously shared to support our younger Pymble graduates. We look forward to seeing more of you in May 2025 at an exciting new venue!

In addition to the Networking Event, Pymble’s Futures Department hosted their annual Careers Expo with Alumni speakers where many of our alumni came to meet and present to current students. We have also hosted two beautiful alumni weddings at our chapel and a very special Pymble reunion in London organised by Natasha Gourlay-Harris (1989).

Most recently, we celebrated the ‘unending chain’ of Pymble girls by welcoming our mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers with a current student at the College to a special morning tea on the last day of Term.

I am wishing you and your families a lovely winter break.

All’ Ultimo Lavoro.

Happy 100th birthday Bettina Gillies!

Happy 100th birthday Bettina Gillies!

Bettina Gillies (Love, 1942)

A very happy 100th birthday to Bettina Gillies (nee Love) who attended Pymble Ladies’ College from 1935 to 1942. In her final year Bettina was a Prefect, Head of Marden House, Class Captain and was awarded the Bronze Medallion for Conduct, Labour and Play. A talented athlete, Bettina won the All Schools’ Senior Championship for running and was a member of the Firsts Hockey Team in her graduating year.

During her time at Pymble, Bettina’s closest friends were Margaret Royle (nee Poole) and Dorothy Betty (nee Worrall). After school, Bettina went on to study physiotherapy at Sydney University and worked in London and Sydney after graduation.

Bettina maintained her connection with the College, sitting on the Old Girls’ Committee with close friend Dorothy as president. The Pymble connection continued with her two daughters Melinda Long (Gillies,1975) and Catriona Lawson (Gillies,1969) attending the College from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Bettina is still living at home but is not quite so sporty these days!

Are there any more centenarians in our community? We, and Bettina, would love to hear from you if so! Please reach out to Katrina Corcoran, Alumni Relations Manager at kcorcoran@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.

ESU President Update

ESU President Update

Networking and mentoring are two critical enablers to a successful life after school, particularly when it comes to our careers. We all choose different pathways and work plays a different role for everyone, but regardless of our choices, our networks are a vital part of building connections, gathering information, finding opportunities and progressing through our chosen path.

Through networking or other avenues, we also may gain access to the valuable wisdom and advice that can be secured through the relationship with mentors. As Pymble Alumni, we all have access to a rich and diverse network, with the potential for mentoring support. The 2024 Alumni Networking Event in held in May was testament to the fabulous success and diversity of Pymble Alumni.

The Ex-Students’ Union was active in the preparation and lead up to the event and, as President, I had the honour of facilitating one of the panels. A highlight of the evening for the Ex-Students’ Union Committee was witnessing the buzz as attendees moved through the various activities, potentially building their own networks. We were also thrilled to have some new members join the Ex-Students’ Union Committee on the evening.

Looking ahead, we are busy organising Commemoration Day on Sunday July 28. This is always a beautiful Chapel Ceremony, and all are welcome. Preparations are also underway for the Garden Party as we look to continue to build on the success of the traditional chicken sandwich and champagne stall with our strawberries with whipped cream.

The Ex-Students’ Union is represented by a diverse group of former students who each bring a unique skill set and make a valuable contribution to the committee. We are all passionate about a constructive and ongoing relationship with the College as well as cementing relationships amongst the Pymble Alumni. Our working backgrounds are diverse including insurance, corporate governance, not-for-profit, marketing and communications, business analytics, education, retail and full-time post-graduate students. We have an extremely collaborative and supportive culture that allows us all to balance busy lives, working, caring for families and volunteering. We all find our work on the Ex-Students’ Union to be rewarding and interesting.

If you are interested in joining the Ex-Students’ Union Committee, we welcome new members and have plenty of ideas and work to go around. Please feel free to reach out to myself or other committee members.

Congratulations Dr Semmonds, AM (1970)!

Congratulations to Dr Diana Semmonds AM (1970) for receiving her AM Honours in the Kings Birthday Honours list for significant service to ophthalmology, to regulatory bodies, and to professional organisations.

A first for Teegan (2017)

Teegan Wattam has created Charles Darwin University history by becoming the first First Nations graduate to receive a Bachelor of Health Science and Master of Speech and Language Therapy double degree.

Originally from the Northern Territory, Ms Wattam commenced her tertiary healthcare education in Sydney however when Charles Darwin University (CDU) offered places for a double degree in health science and speech pathology, the proud Larrakia and Wadjigan woman jumped at the chance to return home and be part of the first cohort of the course.

“I chose to study at CDU because it’s close to home. I’m a Territory girl born and raised,” Ms Wattam said.

“The biggest factor for me growing up was that there weren’t always the opportunities to study here. And most often than not, you had to leave home to access those opportunities.

“So having CDU open up this course, and being in the first cohort to graduate, was a really big thing for me.”

Set to graduate alongside hundreds of fellow students CDU’s Casuarina campus this week, Ms Wattam said she is eager to address healthcare challenges in the Northern Territory, particularly in helping Territorians who have speech and swallowing difficulties to communicate and manage their conditions effectively.

“I think there’s such a shortage of allied health professionals up here, and because of that there are long wait lists, which is probably the biggest impact as well, that we have a really high turnover of staff,” she said.

“I think people don’t realise the wider impact that allied health professionals have in the areas we can work in. Like, for example, a lot of people just think speech pathologists help people to talk.

“But we do a lot more than that. We help them with swallowing, to communicate in all different ways and in learning.”

Whilst studying at CDU, Ms Wattam captained the institution’s team at the Indigenous Nationals games in 2022, mentored in the Bidjipidji schools program and was in the NT Health Aboriginal Cadetship Program.

Ms Wattam completed this extra-curricular activity while being an attentive aunty to three nephews, who she says are the reason she is dedicated to her education.

“When I am working with young kids, I always think of my nephews because I know I would do anything to help them through life,” she said.

“They’re my reason why I keep studying, to show them the opportunities in education and the impact you can have in people’s lives.”

Now qualified, Ms Wattam hopes to improve healthcare accessibility throughout the NT, and is looking forward to using her specialist knowledge, skills, and culture to make an impact in the community that shaped her.

“I really just want to get out in the community and give back to my mob and help young children have access to all these opportunities,” she said.

“Seeing these little kids achieve so much and the positive impact for them and their families is so rewarding.

“When parents have told me that they’re noticing the changes, it really means so much to me, because I believe in what their kids can do.”

A swimming superstar

Eloise Riley (2018), is a graduating senior at UC Cal Berkeley and a standout member of the Cal swim team. Eloise completed her undergrad in Global Studies in 2023 and just received a post grad certificate in Business Entrepreneurship. Alongside her academic and athletic pursuits, for the past year Eloise has worked as a swim coach at Claremont Club & Spa in California.

With a family legacy in swimming and a history of athletic and academic achievement, Eloise embodies the true spirit of a scholar-athlete. As for what’s next for Eloise, she will be traveling to France to train with her club team before heading to the Olympic Trials.

What advice would you give to young swimmers who aspire to follow in your footsteps?

“As an athlete, it is normal to experience setbacks, but I continuously remind myself of the little girl in me who fell in love with swimming and dreamt of being an Olympian. If you know your own why, and you are passionate about it, then anything is possible!”

What are your aspirations for the future?

“I continue each day working towards my dreams of representing France at an international level, and to be an Olympic Medallist.”

Saskia is USA bound

Congratulations to Alumni Saskia Newman (2019) who represented Australia as the Vice Captain in AUS Deaf Football team recently to play in the world champions Denver, Colorado. Well done, Saskia!

Australian Olympic Indigenous Scholarship Program Graduate

We’re thrilled to congratulate our past student, Libby Cook-Black (2011), on her graduation from the Australian Olympic Indigenous Scholarship program.

Libby, a passionate coach and a proud woman of the Samep Tribe from Erub Island, has truly shone in this extraordinary journey.

Reflecting on her experience, Libby shares, “Being a part of this program has been incredibly special. It made me feel seen, heard, and valued. This is just the beginning of something amazing.”

During her studies at Pymble, Libby was an Indigenous Scholar and a member of the Pymble Elite Sportswomen’s Program (PESP) that fosters the development of young athletes through assistance and motivation as well as offering guidance to maintain a balance between high-level sporting commitments and academic studies.

Libby is a former Jillaroo, representing Australia in Rugby League. Her latest achievement in the Australian Olympic Indigenous Scholarship program highlights the importance of representation and support in sport, and we’re so proud to see her inspiring the next generation of athletes. Congratulations, Libby!

As the year continues at a fast pace, Term 2 has drawn to a close and the 2024 Paris Olympics looms large on the horizon. To mark this major sporting event on the calendar, this article celebrates some things ‘Olympic’ (and sporting) connected to Pymble Ladies’ College. Our Olympic connections and triumphs go back to the beginnings of the College and extend right through to the present day.

The first Australian women to participate in the Olympics included Miss Mina Wylie, who competed in the 1912 Olympics held in Stockholm. There, she won a silver medal in swimming. She continued to swim competitively, and between 1912 and 1924, held every record for every swimming stroke. She was also the first Australian woman to win a diploma of the Royal Life Saving Society.

After retiring from competitive swimming, Mina Wylie joined the staff at Pymble Ladies’ College as a teacher of swimming in 1928. She went on as ‘Miss Wylie’ to teach hundreds of Pymble girls swimming and lifesaving. She finally stopped active teaching in 1970, after 42 years of service working at Pymble. She was elevated to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Florida in 1975.

Mina Wylie continued her interest in children’s swimming and attended all of Pymble’s swimming carnivals, proudly wearing her Australian team blazer and carrying her stopwatch until her death in 1984. So many Pymble girls were able to benefit from her skill, passion and dedication over so many decades at our College.

From there, the Olympic roll call continues for staff, students and others associated with Pymble Ladies’ College. In 1980 and 1984, former staff member Graeme Brewer competed in swimming at the Moscow and LA Games. Alumni Mackenzie Little (2014) is a champion javelin thrower – a sport she discovered after one of her hurdles competitions was cancelled! Former student Tess Gerrand is an Australian former national representative rower. She is a national champion, an Olympian who competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics, was a competitor at the 2013 World Rowing Championships and a medallist at World Rowing Cups in 2013. Brittany O’Brien competed in Rio in 2016 as a diver – so many sports, so many Pymble connections.

Fast forward to 2024 and the Olympic flavour continues at Pymble. The College was recently announced as an Olympic Pathway School – the first independent girls’ school in Australian to receive such an accolade. This reinforces our position as a leader for young women in sport, with a large array of future Olympic athletes destined to graduate from our hallowed halls over the coming years and well into the future.

Whether it be at an elite level or more standard sporting pursuits, girls at Pymble Ladies’ College today can participate in a plethora of sports, such as artistic gymnastics, athletics and cross country, AFL, badminton, basketball, cricket, diving, equestrian, fencing, soccer, futsal, golf, hockey, indoor rock climbing, mountain biking, netball, orienteering, rhythmic gymnastics, rowing, rugby sevens, sailing, snow sports, softball, surfing, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, touch footy, triathlon, volleyball and water polo.

Students at Pymble engaging in physical culture, 1919

This broad range of options is very different to the more basic and limited possibilities for sports at Pymble in the 1900s where girls did high jump and other activities in their ‘formal’ uniform complete with stockings and collared shirts no less! Today’s sporting attire that includes fabrics such as Lycra are much more suited for movement than those of the past.

I imagine many of you have fond memories of engaging in sports during your time at Pymble and possibly enjoyed a few laughs along the way! Feel free to drop me a line at kmurray@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au and share your stories of life at Pymble, whether it be sport related or your life and times on campus; your experiences are all part of the story of Pymble Ladies’ College and I would love to hear them.

Where are they now?

Tiarna Williams (2020)

It seems like yesterday that I was literally running back to Lang House at the end of day to make sure I got first dibs at afternoon tea! I also miss my chats with Mrs Burgess (usually about The Beatles), catching up with Albert at dinner and hanging out with the girls in the common room. My time as a Boarder at Pymble did not come without its challenges, but I am so grateful for being able to experience Pymble life and I treasure the memories I made.

My life since graduating from Pymble has only gotten busier and busier… and busier.

During Year 12, I secured early entry into the University of Wollongong and I am currently in my fourth year of studying a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of International Studies. I am really enjoying my studies and I’m hopeful that one day I can work for the United Nations as a human rights lawyer. Last year, I was lucky enough to study in London on exchange for a semester. During my six months overseas, I had the opportunity to travel extensively through Europe, visiting many of the ancient sites I studied in Mr Stewart’s ancient history class! I explored France, Italy, Austria and the Netherlands, as well as many adventures in London.

Towards the end of 2023, I was awarded the prestigious New Colombo Plan scholarship by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This scholarship allows university students to study and work in the Indo-Pacific region. As part of this scholarship, I will be travelling to Singapore later this year to continue my studies and also undertake an internship at the Australian High Commission in Singapore. I am super excited about this opportunity, and I’d like to give a massive shout out to Miss Howie for writing a fabulous reference for me that was submitted as part of my application for this scholarship.

Throughout my studies and travel, I’ve continued to compete in tennis, playing for my university in Australia and also overseas. It’s very different tracking through snow to play tennis outdoors! I recently returned from the Australian Open in Melbourne where I was helping out as a mentor and coach during the Evonne Goolagong National Development Camp. Shout out to the Pymble Boarders, Giselle and Sophia, who attended the camp with me and did an amazing job!

Hello, and welcome to your mid-year edition of The Jacaranda Post. As always, we hope that wherever you are in the world, you and your loved ones are safe and well. This feels particularly relevant now as I’m seeing a rebirth of COVID and an outbreak of pneumonia in Sydney and abroad. Please look after yourself.

It fills me with an enormous sense of pride and joy to look back on the term that has been and reflect on the opportunities we have had to connect with our alumni in ways that benefit so many of our past, present and future students.

The official launch of Pymble as an Australian Olympic Pathway School

On Saturday 11 May, we had the great pleasure of welcoming back to Pymble several of our elite athletes including Chloe Dalton OAM (2011), Dr Mackenzie Little (2014), Brittany O’Brien (2016) and Danielle Scott (2007). Our four Olympians joined us for the official announcement of our designation as an Olympic Pathway School by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) – Pymble is the only independent School in Australia to achieve this recognition.

To be recognised as an Australian Olympic Pathway School, a school must meet strict criteria set by the AOC and have a well-established and successful elite athlete development program that includes Olympic Sports. Pymble currently offers 21 Olympic sports, and of course our Pymble Elite Sportswomen’s Program (PESP) has been supporting the holistic development of our athletes who compete at an elite level since 2007.

The opportunity this official pathway presents to our girls – many of whom are working hard to realise their dreams of competing in front of a home crowd at the Brisbane 2032 Olympics – is truly life changing. Being an AOC Olympic Pathway School also opens other exciting opportunities. Next year, we hope to take our top athletes to the Australian International Training facility in Italy, and we have recently met with a renowned football club in London who are keen to partner with us on development programs in Australia. Stay tuned for more details to follow soon!

We wish our alumni and current staff who will be competing at Paris 2024 all the very best. If you haven’t already seen our Olympic Pathways video on social media, please enjoy this short clip.

Our Annual Alumni Networking Event

Our flagship alumni event for the year, the annual Networking Evening at KPMG on 16 May, was another outstanding success thanks to the good will and engagement of our wider community. A sincere thank you to the 80 amazing individuals who attended the event as mentors willing to share their experience and advice with the 120 alumni who came along as mentees, keen to progress their career journey.

We appreciate your ongoing feedback about the efficacy and value of this program, which continues to guide and inform the next year’s event – so please, keep your feedback coming. In the meantime, our heartfelt thanks go to our amazing host for the evening, ESU President and university lecturer, Dr Rowena Ditzell (1986), and to CEO of Qantas Group Vanessa Hudson (1987) for her thoughtful and engaging keynote address.

We were also honoured to have so many of our Board members generously share their time and knowledge at this event, including our Chair of the Board, Chris Fydler OAM, Kristen Wydell, Eve Clark (1997), Li Enn Koo (1991), Suzi Nicoletti, and Dr Fiona Roughley SC (2001).

Next year’s date will once again be in May, and we would love to see even more alumni at our fifth annual event.

For those who were unable to attend, you might enjoy catching sight of a few familiar faces in this Alumni Networking Event video.

Pymble Foundation Annual Appeal

These two events, and so many more throughout the year, are testament to the lifelong value of a Pymble education and the ongoing care and responsibility we demonstrate to one another as a community.

As work continues to enhance our learning spaces within the main Pymble campus and at Vision Valley, we have been so grateful for the generosity of our community who have been inspired to give back to the College through our Annual Appeal. These thoughtful gifts have been directed to the People, Places or Programs that have great meaning for our generous donors and will have enormous impact on the lives of our current and future generations of Pymble girls.

If you’re interested in learning more about how you can support future generations of Pymble girls and ensure that our much-loved College remains at the forefront of a world-class education, we warmly invite you to click here to learn more about our Annual Appeal. Alternatively, you are most welcome to contact our Director of Philanthropy, Ms Sara Jones via sara.jones@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au or foundation@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au.

Signing off with gratitude and best wishes, until we meet again.

Welcome to our new College Reverends

Welcome to our new College Reverends

In May we had the pleasure of marking a special moment for our community, as we officially inducted Rev Danielle Hemsworth-Smith and Rev Cass Blake. The Reverends play an important role in the lives of our entire Pymble family, and we were delighted to mark this occasion with a special chapel service attended by members of our Board and the Uniting Church in Australia, the families of our new Reverends, our Boarders and the wider community.

Australian Olympic Pathway School

Australian Olympic Pathway School

Pymble Ladies’ College is now an Australian Olympic Pathway School, the first independent school to achieve this recognition. This allows students to pursue their Olympic dreams with access to world-class sports and training facilities, accredited coaches and formal pathways to high-performance teams and elite competition.

Olympian and Pymble Ladies’ College alumni, Dr Mackenzie Little, said it’s pivotal for a school to support athletes in both their academic and sporting endeavours.

Pymble is well deserving of this recognition,” Mackenzie said.

“As a student, it is really important to balance athletics, academics and all of the co-curricular activities that you can at school and have your teachers be supportive of your training and be mindful of the whole athlete and person. That is something that Pymble does really well.”

Alumni Networking Event

Alumni Networking Event

Over 200 Alumni, both mentors and mentees, joined us in May at KPMG in Barangaroo for Pymble’s 2024 Alumni Networking Event.

We were delighted to welcome Vanessa Hudson (1987), Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Qantas Group, as our guest speaker and learn about her inspiring career journey. Being brave, taking initiative and trusting your team were some of the insights Vanessa shared in conversation with Eve Clark (1997), Pymble Board member.

Hosted by James Hunter, former Pymble Chair, Chris Fydler, Chair of the College Board, Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal and the Pymble Ex-Students’ Union, the Alumni Networking Event is an annual evening designed to promote professional connection, mentoring and support amongst our Alumni community.

The evening also included an engaging discussion panel with members of the Pymble Ladies’ College Board, facilitated by Dr Rowena Ditzell (1986), ESU President. Afterwards, our mentees could select to attend one-on-one mentoring sessions with their pre-chosen mentors or choose between three different careers workshops.

Claire Braund from Women on Boards hosted sessions on transitioning from executive life to working on company boards, Anna Raine from The Growth Faculty presented on increasing skill sets and exploring growth opportunities and Li-Enn Koo (1991), Pymble Board member, and Lisa Hills, Senior HR Business Partner advised on interview techniques and making a strong start in your career.

Thank you to all our presenters, facilitators, mentors and mentees for making the 2024 Alumni Networking Event another productive and successful evening. We look forward to welcoming you all again in 2025!

We are cheering Amber on as she represents Australia in this prestigious competition. Well done Amber!

First Nations’ Morning Tea

First Nations’ Morning Tea

First Nations Morning Tea

Since it began in 2007, Pymble’s First Nations’ Scholarship program has seen 44 scholars graduate. There are currently 20 students in the program, four of whom will graduate this year. We are very #pymbleproud of this program and the wonderful students who are such valuable members of the Pymble community.

We recently held a special morning tea to celebrate the success and longevity of the First Nations’ Scholarship program and were delighted to welcome donors and supporters of the program to thank them for their continued support.

The morning tea provided another valuable platform for sharing stories, making connections and building our community.

Ex-student Mothers, Grandmothers and Great-Grandmothers Morning Tea

Each year we celebrate the continued thread of Pymble girls within a family from Great-Grandmothers down the direct line to a current student at the College.

We recently held our morning tea, and it is always a delight to see so many mothers and grandmothers who are alumni attend and have morning tea with their daughter/grand-daughter and also connect with past school friends.

This morning tea is always a highlight on our Alumni calendar.

Jersey Day

Jersey Day

In June our students came together for our annual Jersey Day, a tradition born from the heartfelt initiative of our Boarding students many years ago. This special day pays tribute to the three beloved Boarders – Alanda Clark, Jane Gay and Prudence Papworth – who tragically lost their lives in a plane crash while returning home for the June long weekend in 1993.

The memory of these girls is etched in the stained-glass windows of our chapel and grows in our garden with three Tallowwood trees that were planted in their memory near Mollie Dive Field. The Alanda Clark, Jane Gay and Prudence Papworth Boarding Scholarship was also created in their honour, and on Jersey Day our students raise funds to help contribute to this scholarship and continue their legacy.

Welcome to Lisa Golding – Head of Community Connections

We are thrilled to welcome Lisa Golding to the College, who has been appointed to the role of Head of Community Connections.

As Head of Community Connections, Lisa will lead the team that is responsible for Pymble events as well as the College Shop and Alumni Relations.  Lisa will be the key point of contact for fostering collaborative relationships within and beyond the educational environment at Pymble and will be the main point of liaison with the Pymble Parent Association and our other parent sub-groups, as well as ensuring robust ties with various community groups to enhance the College’s presence and impact.

Food for Thought Lunch

Food for Thought Lunch

It was wonderful to welcome some of our Alumni on campus at the end of Term 1 to spend time with our current Year 12s at a special ‘Food for Thought’ lunch. The Year 12s enjoyed speaking with some of our lovely 2023 graduates, who kindly volunteered their time to share their HSC journey and offer advice and support to our current cohort.

Our students also enjoyed hearing from our keynote speaker, Annika Mounstephens (2018). Recently graduated from UNSW with a degree in Economics and Neuroscience, Annika is now working in a consulting position in the tech field. She also enjoyed a year living in Canada before using her entrepreneurial talent, starting her own business during her years of study. Annika shared an inspiring story with our students about taking opportunities as they present themselves, and the importance of learning and building your ‘toolkit’ along the way.

Sincerest thanks to Annika, our recent graduates and the staff who worked so hard to bring this wonderful event to our students.

Careers Expo

Careers Expo

Thank you to the Alumni who joined us for the Careers Expo early in Term 2.

It was a great evening where Pymble students and their parents were able to explore tertiary study and career options by speaking to representatives from tertiary education providers, listening to presentations and meeting professionals from the Pymble community who represented many career areas.

We are so grateful to have Alumni who generously gave up their time to offer advice and career insights to our students.
