ESU Tech Industry Networking Event

ESU Tech Industry Networking Event

On Wednesday 1 March the Pymble Ladies’ College Ex-Students’ Union (ESU) was delighted to host the Tech Industry Networking Event at Stone & Chalk Startup, Sydney.

It was wonderful to be joined by approximately 50 Pymble alumni who were keen to network and hear from our panel of experts. Our panel included Jasmine Logaraj (2010) – Associate Director at EY, Laura Ly (2015) – Digital Growth Strategist at Google Customer Solutions AUNZ and Julia Mitchelmore (2010) – Software Engineer at Canva.

Thank you to Jasmine, Laura and Julia who were so engaging and generously shared their expertise. Thank you also to the alumni who attended the event ready to learn and connect with their fellow alumni. We were so delighted with this turnout, and the ESU are looking forward to organising another industry networking event again soon.

Happy Foundation Day!

Happy Foundation Day!

On 8 February 1916, Pymble Ladies’ College, formerly known as Presbyterian Ladies’ College Pymble, officially opened with 60 girls on the roll, 20 of whom were Boarders. In its 107-year history, many Pymble girls have walked our grounds and the College has helped forge paths for women where there were none. Pymble has seen vast growth, but we are continually reminded of the contributions of those who have come before us.

On Foundation Day, we celebrate our history and the enduring spirit of our community.

We were delighted to welcome some of our lovely alumni back to the College for our Foundation Day celebrations on Wednesday 8 March.  These ladies have had a long association with the College, some of whom left school over 70 years ago. Thank you for the contributions you make to our College community. Also, a a special mention to Pippa Kensit (2012) for being a wonderful and inspiring guest speaker!

Once a Pymble girl, always a Pymble girl.

We hope you enjoy these photos below that were taken in the early years of the College. if you are Interested in reading more about Pymble’s history,  This is Pymble is a booklet  created in 2021 to celebrate our 105-year anniversary.

Pymble Gives Back in 2023

Pymble Gives Back in 2023

Hello, and welcome to your first edition of The Jacaranda Post for 2023. We hope that, wherever you are in the world, you and your loved ones are safe and well.

Back at Pymble, we kicked off 2023 with a College-wide focus on being of service to others by collecting much-needed items to support the work of the amazing teams at Wayside Chapel, Dignity and The Smith Family. Our students, families and staff donated bags and bags and bags of clean clothing, new underwear and warm blankets to send on to the charities at the end of Term 1. In Term 2, we will continue to give back to these organisations as well as Days for Girls, The Barbara May Foundation, Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Women’s Shelter and several charities supporting those affected by cancer.

Happy 107th birthday to Pymble!

We were grateful to have the opportunity to connect with our alumni at our 107th birthday celebrations in February. More than 22,000 graduates are doing wonderful things in the world thanks to their Pymble education, and it was our great pleasure to welcome seven of you to this year’s Foundation Day Assembly:

  • Margaret Coleman OAM (1946)
  • Margaret Snodgrass OAM (Forsyth,1956)
  • Jackie Farrar (Molyneux, 1954)
  • Helen Booth (Jenkyn, 1954)
  • Hilarie Wood (Orman, 1959)
  • Sue White (Vicars, 1958)
  • Pippa Kensit (2012).

Each of these influential and compassionate women has helped shape our College into what it is today, not only through their time as students but also their work after graduation, as historians, contributors to our First Nations program, careers advisors and active members of our Ex-Students’ Union. It’s exciting to think that some of the students at this year’s Foundation Day assembly will one day attend future celebrations to share their stories and inspire others to leave a legacy that contributes to the ongoing wonderfulness of Pymble.

Thank you to Pippa Kensit, our Foundation Day guest speaker for 2023. Pippa is a truly inspiring and humble young woman who is having a deep and lasting impact on the health outcomes of people in regional and rural Australia.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

We also enlisted the help of our alumni to amplify what is quite possibly our most significant International Women’s Day message to date. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Melanie Kurzydlo (Cowlishaw, 2001), Chloe Dalton (2012) and Li-Enn Koo (1991) this year to create:

  • magazine in partnership with The Australian Financial Review to celebrate the unique strengths and skills of inspirational female role models, Pymble girls and alumni.
  • a campaign called Chairs for Change encouraging corporate Australia to remove gender associations from the title of the highest office in business by changing Chairman to Chair. I’m delighted to say this campaign has gone global, with companies all over the world signing up.
  • a new episode of our Speaking of Change podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts featuring the triple elite athlete, Chloe Dalton, who is blazing trails for female athletes. Our latest episode features Melanie Kurzydlo on building a career in construction and the importance of female role models.

A huge thank you to Melanie, Chloe and Li-Enn for stepping so confidently and thoughtfully into these new channels with us to help create a more equal workplace for all girls and young women, including our past, present and future Pymble girls.

Introducing the Pymble Foundation

In other big news, we were delighted to officially announce the formation of our new Pymble Foundation at our annual Icebreaker event for current parents and carers.

The establishment of our Foundation and Board is the result of a great deal of research and work to ensure the College has the right governance, skills and oversight to lead and manage philanthropy among our Pymble community. At the core of our philanthropic aspirations lies our College vision and mission for our students, which of course is supported by our Strategic Direction 2021-2030: Watch Us Change the World.

The Pymble Foundation Board will focus on investment in the people, places and programs that will assist our students in their journey to become compassionate and influential young women who have the hearts, minds and skillset to make the world a better place. This includes new facilities and learning spaces on our two campuses, as well as means-tested bursaries, which will enable our generous Pymble community to continue to give back to students who deserve, but may not be able to access, a world-class, life-changing education. It was with great pride that we welcomed our first Foundation Bursary recipient to Pymble this year from Ukraine, having been displaced when the war began in 2022.

Our highly experienced Pymble Foundation Board is led by Chair, Simon Rothery and Deputy Chair, Rebecca Sullivan. Board members include David Burns, Melinda Graham, James Hunter, Li-Enn Koo, Yehan Koo, Alison Rothery, Jessica Shirvington and me. Together, the team brings many decades of expertise in financial governance, business, philanthropy and nurturing strong community relationships. Our Foundation Board members are also personally connected to the College as alumni or through their daughters and are excited by the opportunity to build a successful donor program that will contribute to the continued delivery of an exceptional educational experience at Pymble.

My sincere thanks to our three fabulous ex-students, Rebecca, Alison and Li-Enn for using their gifts and talents to support our Foundation, and therefore our College, both now and into the future.

We look forward to sharing more news about the Pymble Foundation and donor opportunities as they arise. In the meantime, should you wish to start a conversation, please don’t hesitate to contact our Associate Director of Development, Alexandra Wright, on alwright@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au or +61 2 9855 7792.

Until we connect again, take care.

News From the Pymble Alumni Team

Welcome back to the end of another busy first term at Pymble and what promises to be a wonderfully busy year.

It has been a delight to connect with many alumni at the reunions and events held already this term and we are excited to be planning a full year of fun to come. Happily, lockdown and social distancing really is a very distant memory now!

We continue to value the close connection between the College and the Ex-students’ Union Committee and we extend a very warm welcome to our new ESU President Fiona Walmsley (McGeachie, 1996). Fiona is a passionate Pymble advocate and a current parent to Grace in Year 9. Welcome Fiona!

Two upcoming, important dates to note are our annual Networking Event at KPMG Barangaroo hosted by the College and the Ex-Students’ Union (ESU) on Thursday 18 May. This is an important event providing valuable guidance and support for our newest Pymble alumni as they set out post-their post-Pymble life. Our Commemoration Day Service on Sunday 30 July led by Rev Punam is always a beautiful opportunity to come together to celebrate the dedication of the College.

ESU President Update

ESU President Update

It has been a busy start to the year and the Ex-Students’ Union Committee has been planning for an exciting 2023.  It has been wonderful to welcome some new members onto the Committee as well as our members who have been involved for many years, all of whom have been so welcoming to me as I settle into the President’s role.  If you are interested in being involved, please do get in touch – we would love to hear from you.

One of the significant days we celebrated this term was International Women’s Day – a day to reflect on and push for gender equality, as well as shining a well-deserved spotlight on the achievements of women around the world.  Many of our Pymble alumnae were featured in the College’s IWD campaign in partnership with the Australian Financial Review.

This UN theme this year for IWD was innovation and technology for gender equality; to elevate and advance gender parity in technology and celebrate the women forging innovation.  This provided the perfect frame for our ESU industry networking event for women in tech which we held on Wednesday 1 March at the Stone & Chalk startup space in Sydney.  We were joined by around 50 Pymble ex-students who were keen to network and hear from our panel of experts.  Our panel included Jasmine Logaraj (2010), Laura Ly (2015) and Julia Mitchelmore (2010), who all generously shared their expertise and experience to provide an engaging discussion for the audience.  A particular take-away was how very different a ‘career in tech’ can look.  Our panelists had all taken extremely different (and not necessarily linear) paths to get where they are today – a great encouragement for all of us to be brave in seeking out challenges or taking opportunities that arise.

The evening was a great success, and a particular thank you goes to Rowena Ditzell (1986) and Brigitte Liew (2014), our ESU Committee members who were responsible for the organisation.  This session followed the legal industry event that was held last year, with the aim of providing smaller, more targeted connection and networking opportunities.  We will look to build on this series later this year.

We are also busily preparing for our major networking event, to be held next term on Thursday 18 May in partnership with the College.  This is focused on connecting recent alumnae with members of the Pymble community who have established careers in a wide range of industries.  We are lucky to once again be holding this event at KPMG’s Barangaroo offices, thanks to the generosity of the Chair of our College Board, James Hunter and his colleagues at KPMG.  In line with the College theme for 2023, our panel discussion on the night will be focused on ‘giving back’.

I look forward to meeting more members of our wonderful Pymble community at this exciting event.

Chloe Luzar (2020)

Chloe Luzar (2020)

When I was a student at Pymble, if you were to ask my friends and family what I was like, they would have probably told you that I was busy – very busy – and that I spent more time at Pymble than I did at home. Between co-curricular dance, bands and orchestras, leadership opportunities and snow sports, I always strived to be actively engaged in the Pymble community. When I look back on my school time, I remember the great teachers I had, the countless opportunities I explored, and the amazing friends I met (and still talk to today).

The sense of family was paramount at Pymble.  From when I first stepped onto the beautiful college grounds in 2012 in Year 4, to graduation in 2020, Pymble was my second home. It still is, as I share my love of dance there as a dance instructor.

As a student, I had a love of learning about the environment. Environmental topics in class were my favourite to study and discuss, and I often took those topics home and researched them myself. I was so excited to discover the subject of Earth and Environmental Sciences in Year 11, and it became my favourite, and one of my highest performing, HSC subjects.

My love of natural sciences has followed me beyond Pymble, and currently, I am in my 3rd year of a double degree at Macquarie University; a Bachelor of Science (Specialisation in Earth and Environmental Sciences) and a Bachelor of Laws. My university experience has, for the most part, been a normal university experience, working between two jobs and a full-time university degree.

In February 2022 I was invited to an information session on the New Colombo Plan (NCP) Scholarship Program. The NCP is an Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) initiative aiming to lift knowledge on the Indo-Pacific Region by supporting students to study and undertake internships on an exchange program within the region. NCP Scholarships are awarded to Australian undergraduate students each year to support them to study and undertake internships in 40 countries across the Indo-Pacific Region for anywhere between 6-18 months.

At the time, it sounded daunting, it sounded like a lot of hard work, and I was not too sure this was something I wanted to do, nor confident that I was who they were looking for. I initially decided to leave the program be, but after much thought and soul searching, changed my mind.

With two days to go before university applications closed, I started an application for the NCP program. I had no clue what I was doing, and I was a bit unsure about what I was applying for. I think the tipping point in choosing to apply, was asking myself, what could go wrong? I mean, I could apply, and get the scholarship, and have the best experience of my life. Or I could not get it and continue as is. From that perspective, deciding about whether to apply or not seemed a lot easier.

To my surprise and shock, I successfully passed the university’s internal round. Before I knew it, I was commencing an 8-month application process for the NCP scholarship. After numerous application drafts, submission phases, interview rehearsals, and interviews, in November 2022, I found out that I was one of the prized 150 NCP Scholars for 2023.

In December 2022, I travelled to Canberra to meet all the 150 2023 NCP Scholars at the NCP Training and Induction week. I got the privilege of listening to NCP Alumni share their stories and meet key members of DFAT. I also met so many amazing, outspoken, and outgoing NCP scholars with the most incredible NCP programs planned ahead. I was told that the loudest group in a room are a group of NCP Scholars, and that was most certainly proven true. I wish them all the best on their NCP journeys this year, many of whom have already started.

What does my NCP program look like? I will embark to Tonga in early December 2023, where I will study at the University of the South Pacific, undertake Tongan language training, and hopefully intern with the Pacific Community in Tonga for their Geoscience, Energy and Maritime Division under the Disaster and Community Resilience Programme. After 6-8 or so months in Tonga, I plan to travel within the Pacific Islands and undertake some more work with regional organisations, including the Secretariat of the Pacific Region for the Environment Programme (SPREP). I will be overseas for around 12 months, and I am so excited to commence my journey.

This process has made me more comfortable with applying for and experiencing new opportunities. Since late December, I have been volunteering as a mentor for the Earth Prize Foundation as part of their annual global Earth Prize Competition, a $200,000 environmental sustainability competition for school-aged students who can receive monetary support and sponsorship for a sustainability project.

I have also reached out to the Sydney Tongan Language School in preparation for my NCP journey. I am currently undertaking Tongan language classes with fellow Tongan Australians every weekend. Through the school, I am learning so much about Tongan culture, language, and society and am making many new friends along the way.

Up until now, I never considered myself a risk-taker, or someone who took on new and unique opportunities readily. Applying for the NCP Scholarship has given me new confidence in myself and my abilities. I am so excited to start my NCP program, and I look forward to what opportunities it could bring once I return to Australia. Pymble is still a large part of me, and my friends and experiences have greatly influenced where I am today. 3 years on and Pymble is still my home, and I am forever grateful for its contribution to who I am now.

If there is one event that you need in your diary for school holidays this year it is Sculpture on the Farm in Dungog. The exhibition, to be held on the October long weekend, is a must-see for art lovers and enthusiasts. Sculpture on the Farm was founded by Philippa Graham (Myers, 1969), who received in 2022 a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the creative arts, particularly as a sculptor. Committed to creating projects that build and nurture community, Sculpture on the Farm is all about participation in and understanding of the arts, for people of all ages.

The exhibition is held on stunning Gringai Country nestled amongst the rolling hills at “Fosterton”, Philippa and John Graham’s cattle farm just outside Dungog town.

With a diverse range of styles and mediums on display in over 100 sculptures, this year’s exhibition will showcase the talent and creativity of established and emerging artists from all over Australia. Visitors will enjoy indoor works as well as wandering into the paddocks, and rambling through the garden to admire artworks scattered across the grounds. Up to $60,000 in prizes will be awarded for excellence in metal, timber, and stone works, for innovation, for indoor and outdoor works as well as a prize for a local artist. The community-engagement focus of the exhibition is highlighted by a number of acquisitive prizes – this year there will be three major sculptures selected for permanent public display in the Dungog region.

The event also boasts live music, people’s choice awards, and artist talks and tours giving visitors the chance to learn about the creative processes and techniques used by the sculptors.

A holiday in Dungog and the region can be easily filled with activities for the whole family – bike trails and bush walks at the Dungog Common, a local brewery, grower’s markets, boutiques, cafes and more.

Pymble has a host of successful artists in its alumnae ranks including Sue Sharpe (Thomson, 1964),  the late Kerrie Lester (1971), Christine Webb (Grieve, 1972), Cathy Shugg (1980), Cathy Lane (1981), Heather Versteeg (Fernon, 1983), Clare Brodie (Self, 1986), Fiona Galbraith (1997), Philippa’s daughter Pennie Pomroy (Graham, 1997), Amber Rogers (2002) and Rebekah Jackson (Stanley, 2004). All sculptors amongst Pymble students, alumnae and the school community are encouraged to apply to be a part of the exhibition with applications closing 1 July 2023.

This year’s Sculpture on the Farm will be held over the long weekend Saturday 30 September to Monday 2 October with a preview and gala opening on Friday 29 September. Dungog is approximately 3 hours north of Sydney. Weekend entry to the exhibition is $5 and free for children. Tickets for the preview and gala opening will be available mid-year.

Philippa is of course really excited for this year’s event: “It will be great to see some of Australia’s leading sculptors again on the farm at Dungog. And this year, I am especially looking forward to unveiling a surprise installation in our tractor shed.”

Sculpture on the Farm is a wonderful celebration of art and community – not to be missed! Scan the QR code or visit www.sculptureonthefarm.com for all the details.

1956 – 65+2 Year Reunion

On Saturday 4 March, the lovely ladies of the 1956 year group gathered for a belated 65 Year reunion lunch at the College.  Many years may have passed since they graced the grounds as students however their memories of attending the College haven’t faded.  We were thrilled to welcome these ladies back with many of them taking the opportunity to be shown around the College by two of our Year 10 boarders prior to lunch.  We look forward to seeing them again at the College in a few years.

Canberra Reunion

The Canberra Yacht Club was full of Pymble spirit on Saturday at the Canberra and Regions Luncheon. We were delighted to welcome alumni who live and work in Canberra, with our attendees consisting of decades of Pymble girls spanning from the 1960s to the 2000s. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event – we can’t wait to see you at the next one!

1983 – 40 Year Reunion

On Saturday 25 March, over fifty 1983 leavers gathered at the College for their 40 Year Reunion.  Prior to the lunch, many went on a tour of the College by two Year 10 Boarders and some of the ex-students have not been back in 40 years, so they were all delighted to see how the College has grown yet remained the same in many ways.

The ladies were so thrilled to be together that many continued on afterwards at another venue for many hours and there are also plans to get together again at the end of the year.

Ex-student Tour and Morning Tea

Ex-student Tour and Morning Tea

Are you interested in visiting your old school grounds for a walk down memory lane? Each term we hold our much-loved Ex-student Tour and Morning Teas – our former students tour the campus, share lots of funny stories along the way, and feel impressed with how much the College has grown and changed since they left.

If you would like to join our next Ex-student Tour and Morning Tea, we are hosting one on Thursday 11 May, Friday 18 August and Monday 6 November at 10.30am. Please email our Alumni Relations Manager, Katrina Corcoran (1987), kcorcoran@pymblelc.nsw.edu.au to save your spot.
